Poomala meaning 'flower hill' is a tiny village located in the outskirts of Thrissur town. The damn can be reached in 20 minutes and is just 12 km away from the famous Swaraj round; the heart of Thrissur. The dam is known for its dead silence, which is free from the sounds and the pollution in the city. It is a cool place to spend some time and silence and in fact the best place to meditate. To reach Poomala dam one should take the road at the right side before the park. The area is full of green trees and hence is the best place to get some clean air. When comparing with the other tourists spots in Thrissur, the poomala Dam stands in 15th place in the attraction list.
There is a small park located at the dam site which has got few benches facing the reservoir and few rides for the children. The park is equipped with a volleyball court where one could play beside the reservoir and is welcomed by cold breeze from the lake.The place is well known for its sleepy calmness and for a short picnic with family. There is a resort along side the lake for those who wish to spend a couple of nights at the site.
Poomala Dam can be reached by taking the Thrissur-Shoranur road (SH 22) and head towards Wadakkanchery. After reaching Viyyor central prisson go further for about two km. On reaching Thiroor center take the right, the road does look small and is not a main road. The way from here is curly and confusing, its always better to ask for directions.
In less than a kilometer away from poomala dam is the Pathazhakundu dam. The length of the dam is 110m and the maximum water level is 14m. Both the poomala dam and Pathazhakundu dam are small and solely used for irrigation purposes.
