Like every insurance claim, OneAssist has got a lot of terms and conditions that decide about the insurance plan or the claim process. In this article, I will be discussing about the facts and figures hidden in the Mi Protect insurance plan that can be purchased for Mi mobile phones a.k.a Xiaomi from mi.com.

Here are some key points to be understood when buying the insurance or when making a claim -
  • No guaranteed cover from accidental & liquid damage - The insurance does not cover certain instances like damages caused by Negligence or damage to the device due to mysterious circumstances / disappearance or unexplained reasons. This simply means that your reason should be well stated and also, being too genuine and honest could get your claim rejected. Try to make sense and be as detailed as possible. Reasons like these could lead to claim being rejected -
It got liquid damage and I don't know how it happened. Someone might have poured water and cleaned it off.
The display cracked when it fell to the ground from the plane.
  • Cashless repair is a scam - You have to pay a charge for every claim. What OneAssist means by cashless is, no liquid cash transactions. In a broader sense they mean the Modi ji's cashless repair, understood? Customers must pay a 'Excess Charge', which is a nominal fee of 3% of the repair cost or ₹ 300 (whichever is higher). This price bracket is subject to vary if the repair cost increases. Refer the reference links attached at the end of this article.
  • 48 hours deadline to report damage - The damage should be reported within 48 hours from happening or the claim will be rejected. If this deadline has been missed, re-script the scenario to make it fit with in this time frame.
  • 7 days to upload documents and photo's - Photo's regarding the damaged devices and the relevant documents should be uploaded to the site as soon as possible. In some web pages it is given as 15 days, don't get confused. it is best to do it on the same day.
  • Mi Protect does not cover loss of device - In case the mobile device has been lost, the insurance will be useless because Mi Protect covers only for Accidental/liquid damage. Other insurance plans from OneAssist covers loss of device.
  • Pickup services only for select cities - OneAssist will pickup the devices at door in the following locations - Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Chennai, Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Pune, Kolkata and Faridabad ( Municipal limit pincodes of these cities). For rest of India they have 'Mail In / Self Ship Service', where a third party courier will make the pickup (it could take days), or the customer will have to self ship the mobile phone through post.
  • Up-to-date user details - Customer details should be accurate at the time of making a claim - this includes customer address, phone number, mobile handset details. Customer have to create an account on OneAssist after the membership is activated.
  • It could take forever to get your phone repaired - According to a lot of complaints and reviews online, your mobile device can take over two months to get repaired. This will depend on a lot of factors like, the make of the mobile device, spare parts availability, service center, type of pickup/courier service. One Assist claims that on an average it would take 15 - 25 days, in some cases even lesser.

  • Beyond Economic Repairs or Total Loss - If the cost of repair equal to or more than 80% of Sum Insured or Invoice Value, it is termed as BER. In such a case the claimant will receive monetary benefit, which will be calculated on the market value of the device or the amount after a depreciation value in regard to time. More details can be found in the reference link. Under any circumstance, the monetary benefit will not be more than the sum insured or the invoice value of the device.
